Four Brothers DVD Review By Ed Hulse
Video Business
In this disc's featurettes, director John Singleton and screenwriters Paul Lovett and David Elliott identify themselves as fans of horse operas, stating explicitly that they wanted Four Brothers to be an urban Western. What's puzzling is that they never mention the film's ostensible inspiration, The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), which also features a quartet of siblings avenging a parent's murder. The character played by Mark Wahlberg in Singleton's film is clearly patterned after that played by John Wayne in Katie Elder, but you'd never know that from Brothers' featurettes—which, we will admit, are extremely well done. Produced by Light Source & Imagery's Jon Barbour, Gary Khammar and Selina Lin, Brother's featurettes are relatively brief (mostly around 10 minutes) and edited tightly, with no superfluous material. "The Look of Four Brothers," which sheds light on the creative process that produced the film's visual scheme, is perhaps most interesting. Also fascinating is "Crafting Four Brothers," in which Lovett reveals that the script's first draft was shaped by the melancholy experience of attending his grandmother's funeral and puttering around her house—an experience replicated in the screenplay when the brothers return to their old homestead after burying the woman who adopted them. That house is shot to pieces in a bravura sequence deconstructed in a very interesting four-minute featurette. Rounding out the extras package is a serviceable commentary by Singleton and five deleted scenes.

Thanks to FilmInk I can provide some exclusive excerpts of Gill Pringle's interview only seen here at Mark Wahlberg in the News:
----------------------------
"Jesus Christ," says Mark Wahlberg softly, unblinking brown eyes silently watchful from beneath the shadow of a Boston Red Sox cap. Spoken with such fervour, a newcomer to this particular conversation may easily construe Wahlberg's two simple words as blasphamy, given the preponderance of profanities he's voiced over the course of his colorful career. But they'd be wrong.
"Its all about Jesus," he repeats for effect, slouching behind a coffee table in a New york hotel suite, slyly daring you to challenge him. Mark Wahlberg takes JC and the whole heaven business very seriously, attending Mass most Sundays - with or without a hangover[...]
15 years ago I[Gil] interviewed you in your Marky Mark days - What's the biggest life lesson you've learned since then?
Mark: Wear a condom! Seriously, I learned so much. It's just this never ending journey - all the things I've seen and experienced. I dont even know where to start. To read the whole interview pick up an issue!
Music: Wahlberg on home ground By MOCKINGBIRD
The New Straits Times Press
Rough and tough urban setting reminds ‘Four Brothers’ star of his upbringing. FOUR Brothers is the story of adoptive siblings who have grown up and gone their separate ways but return to their native Detroit for the funeral of their beloved mother.
Once back home, they begin to suspect that there may be more to her death than meets the eye and they embark on a journey of discovery, vengeance and, ultimately, redemption.
Mark Wahlberg, whose hit films include The Italian Job and The Perfect Storm, leads the cast as the oldest brother, Bobby, and is joined by relative newcomers Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund. John Singleton (2 Fast 2 Furious, Shaft) directs.
Mark Wahlberg talked to us about why Four Brothers is so meaningful to him and why it was fun to play the oldest brother.
It looks like this character and this setting in ‘Four Brothers’ is closer to you and your real life than any other film you have done. Is that true?
Definitely. It seems much closer to who I am and to a lot of kids that I knew. I grew up in a very poor neighbourhood, the youngest of nine kids, so I was constantly surrounded by family, mostly brothers. I’m the youngest but there were six boys. So this movie feels very much like home for me. I mean, there’s a bathroom scene in the movie and I realised it was just like my house. We had one bathroom with nine kids, two parents, and a grandmother, so it was always a little crowded.
