Mark Wahlberg talks about movies and mistakes on his way to stardom By Gary Thompson

Philadelphia Daily News
The year is 1991, Vanilla Ice is starring in "Cool as Ice," and some kid named Marky Mark is in a 40-minute VHS called "Teen Vid II."

Mr. Ice is already in his 15th minute of fame, and nobody believes Funky Buncher and smirking underwear model Marky Mark, aka Mark Wahlberg, is going anywhere but down the same tube.

Nobody except Wahlberg, who's patiently waiting out his record contract, already determined to make the jump to movies, quietly taking meetings with Hollywood directors.

In a year, he'll have won a job on Penny Marshall's "Renaissance Man," and will be throwing elbows at Leonardo DiCaprio in celebrity basketball games, trying to persuade the "soft" L.A. actor to give him a chance to read for "The Basketball Diaries."

"He was completely against it, as were a lot of other people. So we're in this charity event, and I blocked his shot, and kind of bullied him," said Wahlberg, laughing. He stopped in Philly recently to publicize his latest movie, "Max Payne."

"He didn't like that too much, but I didn't think he was right for the part. He wasn't street. He was a soft kid from Hollywood. The bottom line, though, is that Leo agreed to read with me, and we instantly had respect for each other, and now we have great friendship." More...

Poetry reading paves the way for film's journey into dreams, misery of teens tried as adults

By Jane Ganahl of SF Chronicle
Joie Barnhart of the Richmond District is here because her friend said it would be a cool way to spend a Thursday evening in San Francisco. No age limit at CELLspace gallery, so a 16-year-old is welcome. Besides, says the dark-haired, black-eyelinered youth, as she puts her purse down next to her folding chair, "I like to write poetry, and I hear there are some good poets who are going to read. And there is a movie."

What kind of movie? She smiles. "I'm not sure."

The documentary in question is "Juvies," a grim look at what happens to teenage offenders when they are sucked into the adult prison system. This will not be an evening of "Must Love Dogs" jocularity.

Organizer Stephen Elliott is milling around the audience, looking worried. One of the four writers scheduled to do a reading has not arrived, and the event is past its 7 p.m. start time. He approaches his friend Dave Eggers and says, "Do you think you might be able to read if he doesn't show?" More...

Film exposes life of juveniles in adult prisons

Michigan Daily
Thanks to Sylvie!

By Alex Garivaltis, Daily Staff Reporter
November 09, 2004

Sixteen-year-old Michael Duc Ta was driving with two friends near Los Angeles five years ago when his friends started shooting at another car. Although no one was injured, Ta stood trial as an adult for first-degree attempted murder and received a sentence of 35 years to life.

Ta is profiled in “Juvies,” a documentary by filmmaker Leslie Neale screened yesterday in the Michigan Theater. The film was an outgrowth of a video production course Neale taught at Los Angeles Central Juvenile Detention Hall. It chronicles the experiences of 12 adolescents charged with violent crimes.

The adolescents featured in the documentary were all involved in violent crimes. As a result of toughened criminal laws, the teenagers are forced to stand trial as adults in the film. Every one has been convicted and sentenced to serve in an adult prison.

Neale, who answered questions after the screening, said in the past few years violent crime has decreased nearly 40 percent. Juveniles are increasingly required to stand trial as adults, and media coverage of such events has intensified. More...
