Final word: De Palma on Dahlia

De Palma ala Mod
De Palma answered some questions from the webmaster of De Palma ala Mod (man wouldn't that be nice if you know who did that for this site or even his official one):
In an e-mail correspondence, Brian De Palma said today that he is planning to begin shooting The Black Dahlia in March, 2005. The director confirmed that the revised schedule presents a conflict for Mark Wahlberg, who is planning to begin filming the sequel to The Italian Job that same month. "As of now," said De Palma, "he's not on board." (Wahlberg will be hitting the TV talk shows early next week to promote I Heart Huckabees.)

Dahlia to film 2005?

About.com
De Palma a la mod notes in the interview with Josh Hartnett:

When do you start “Black Dahlia” and “Rum Diary?”
Probably next year. “Black Dahlia’s” going to come first, right after “Lucky Slevin.”

A source told me the movie was still not nailed down to start anytime soon. So we'll see if its now set for 2005. I tell you Mark has a curse on making movies involving boxers. I think someone is telling him he shouldn't play one don't you think?

Dahlia delayed

Contact Music
Filming on the big-screen adaptation of BLACK DAHLIA has been pushed back to the winter (04), following funding problems.

The BRIAN DePALMA-directed movie, which stars JOSH HARTNETT, MARK WAHLBERG and SCARLETT JOHANSSON, was set to go before cameras this month (AUG04).

But because of changing policies in Britain, the project was suddenly out of funding, but is now back on track for shooting later this year.

Rumor Watch: Dahlia cancelled?

De Palma.Net
According to some posting at BrainDePalma.Net, there are stories floating around that Dahlia's funding has fallen thru and the film is cancelled.

Hmm, considering Mark seemed to signed up for another film recently - they must start filming very soon as he's due on the Capote project in November. That leaves him a little over 3 months of time.

via De Palma a la mod
Screen Daily reported yesterday about a fire that destroyed a set at Roma Studios on Wednesday. "It took 12 fire engines five hours to extinguish the fire," wrote Screen Daily's Melanie Rodier, "which destroyed an area of 2,800 square metres. Damage is estimated to be in the region of 'tens of thousands of Euros,' according to national daily Il Messaggero, which reported that firemen also had to knock down all of the studio's electronically-operated doors." Rodier also states that Cinecitta studios "is currently in negotiations to buy Roma Studios, which is headed by Tarak Ben Ammar." The article concludes with this sentence: "Next month, Roma Studios and Cinecitta are both set to host Brian De Palma's upcoming movie, The Black Dahlia."

Scarlett on Dahlia - via De Palma a la Mod

W Magazine
Her character in Black Dahlia, a noir dame who toys with the affections of two detectives (played by Josh Hartnett and Mark Wahlberg), will have the signature De Palma heat. "As Brian says, she's a beautiful little package that you just want to unwrap," Johansson says. "There's some good stuff in this. There's a little romp. A little bit of romping around."

The LA Times had an article on the reissue of a book that said Dr. George Hodel killed the 'Black Dahlia.' The interesting bit is James Ellroy had before discounted the theory when Black Dahlia Avenger came out. Now he writes the forward to the paperback reissue and believes Steve Hodel's theory his father had killed Betty Short.

More on Dahlia in Rome

Screen Int'l
Italy's Cinecitta and Roma studios in first ever collaboration
Melanie Rodier in Rome 30 April 2004 04:00

Brian De Palma's upcoming movie, The Black Dahlia, will start shooting this summer at Cinecitta Studios and Roma Studios, marking the first ever collaboration between Italy's two biggest studios.

An adaptation of James Ellroy's classic noir novel, The Black Dahlia is set in 1940s Los Angeles and tells the story of two cops who investigate the brutal death of a young woman. One of the cops, however, soon realises that his girlfriend had ties to the murdered woman, and begins uncovering a web of corruption and conspiracy within the police department.

The film's cast includes Josh Hartnett and Mark Wahlberg as the two police officers, as well as the ubiquitous Scarlett Johansson and The Dreamers' Eva Green.

Adapted by Josh Friedman, the film is produced by Rudy Cohen, Moshe Diamant and Art Linson, who produced De Palma's The Untouchables.

Production designer will be Dante Ferretti, whose multiple credits include Cold Mountain, Gangs Of New York and The Aviator.

Signature Pictures International is handling international rights.

A source close to Cinecitta confirmed that The Black Dahlia will shoot this summer at both the newly-restored Roma Studios and at the venerable Cinecitta' Studios.

It is expected that De Palma will shoot interiors at Cinecitta' and will use Roma Studios' huge backlot to shoot exteriors.

In recent months, Cinecitta has housed the shoot of Paul Schrader's The Exorcist: The Beginning, and Wes Andersen's The Life Aquatic with Bill Murray.

In June, Cinecitta, which has offices in London, New York and Los Angeles, will also host the shoot of Stephen Soderbergh's Ocean's Twelve.

Roma Studios, which is situated in the countryside outside Rome, is headed by Tarak Ben Ammar. The studio, which was built by producer Dino De Laurentiis in the 1960s, was renovated and re-opened in September 2002, after lying abandoned for over 10 years. Since then, it has hosted the shoot of Ermanno Olmi's $9.5 epic Singing Behind The Screens.

Next year, Cinecitta hopes to take its collaboration with Roma Studios one step further, by operating a theme park on the grounds where Roma Studios is located. Cinecitta owns the grounds and is now trying to work out a deal with Roma Studios.
